Bison facts: sometimes called buffalo | Animal Fact Files

    Bison are also known as “buffalo” in America, but these lumbering giants aren’t only found in America! They may also be known under the name wisent in Europe where the second and only other living Bison species can be found today. These large mammals give us a look into the past as an example of the even larger mammals that once roamed our world. Both bison species nearly went extinct, but today they’re both making comebacks. Bison are large, grazing animals with quite a bit of attitude!

    Scientific Name: American bison (Bison bison); European bison (Bison bonasus)
    Range: American and Europe
    Size: 1,000 to 2,000 pounds (453-907kg) in weight; 5 to 6.5 feet (1.5 to 2m) tall at the shoulders
    Diet: grasses and shrubs
    Lifespan: approximately 15 years
